Previous generations of attorneys used to spend their entire career with one firm. Those days are over.
Since 2010, more than 10 percent of AmLaw 200 associates have lateraled to another firm every year. No less than 53 percent of all current associates will make a career move within three years. It's likely you will as well.
Unlike in prior generations, firms will no longer offer an attorney partnership as a reward for longevity. Today, career advancement and professional satisfaction is a product of a lateral move. In fact, the majority of AmLaw 200 partners did not begin their careers at their current firms.
Various factors may drive a lateral search. You may be a talented attorney, but if there is not a strong need for your practice at your firm, you may hit a ceiling and end up being a senior associate with limited career prospects. You may be in need of better mentorship or client development opportunities to help hone your skill set. Or perhaps you'd thrive in a firm with an identity and culture that better suits you.
Finding a firm that fits all the above requirements is difficult to do without expert assistance, and this is where a good recruiter can add value.
